Technology | Description

Extended rules and examples of tech available for play.

Technology

Acquisition

Many factors affect how someone gets a particular item. Most tech uses Scarcity to express how often someone might find it online or in a shop somewhere along the Ring of Fire. Some buying clubs or vendors have exclusive items that, although normally rare, they might have a large stock.

Other things such as legal restrictions, production costs, hazardous materials, seller location, gifts, or lost-and-found can also play a role in acquisition.

Tech Deliveries

Drones delivery most packages.

Instead of an Attempt, which often gives away to the player what they need to roll, use the following formula to determine the threshold, and then shift it to somewhere else. So for example, a completely unregulated, common item shipped from the same city/area will have a threshold of 10. The player must beat that number. Shift that to 41 through 50 and make the player roll for it. They must roll a number outside that range. If they failed, reroll again later.

If this is a combat delivery and they ordered it during combat, the player needs to roll an Attempt. If they succeed, they should get their item delivered to them or nearby on the next turn. If they fail a combat delivery, reroll again next turn. Delivery rolls, aside from Attempts for the order, do not count toward a player's actions or movement.

Drones

Drones usually refers to a type of physical, robotic machine that can travel somewhere to perform a task. An artificial intelligence can use a drone as a host, at which point they become similar in qualities to an android. Some mechs or vehicles in general can also operate as drones.

Drones, especially commercial and military models, typically use informal kitchen analogies. Some drones have the size of a mug of coffee, others a microwave oven.

Common Models

Daifin Order-Up

The most restaurants use the Order-Up as servers. Most have as many features as a comlink.

PJXT8 Surveyor Aero-Drone

The PJ has enhanced telescopic vision with thermo and nightvision. It can sustain 60 minutes constant flying at a time, at which point it can run on reserve power to make short hops with a speed of 3 for another 6 hours. It recharges using solar coated chasis paint which takes 8 hours. Some models also can swap out their power cells with the help of their operator. It has an arm with a gripping claw, designed to deploy or load materials from its interal cargo. They can carry most mug drones. It can carry approximately 10 kg (22 lbs) internally.

Gensys GIOOTW

The GIOOTW was released in several iterations during the rescue operations following the 2035 earthquake. Rescuers informally called it the Get-It-Out-Of-The-Way. Designed for removing downed trees or rubble. Users can place them or it rolls to its destination. It also has the ability to scale or hang from surfaces using a patented electrostatic adhesive. Scaling and hanging require an Attempt.

Tools

These tools have become very popular in the future...

A mobile device used for computing and as a telephone. These devices distinguish themselves from and replaced "smart phone" technology in the mid 2020s thanks to their ability to completely replace the laptop and desktop PC. Tough some folks still have docking stations that look like a laptop, most folks simply use AR to interact with their comlink without the need for an clunky display monitor.

Holographic Emitters

Typically used for adding a window with a view to a basement wall or a water fountain to an office lobby. The higher the rating the greater the purchase price. Most commercial models have restrictions mainly for proprietary or governmental regulations, usually against impersonating people, including the owner of the product.

Medkits

Paramedics in the urban sprawl and backpackers of the PTC love medkits. These lunchbox-sized packs contain a semi-automated system for repairing physical damage and reducing pain. Significantly more expensive models come coupled with a drone for completely automatic use.

Subvocals

Subvocal-recorders and microphones, or SVRs, a widely used device for conducting secret or private conversations in public, often in the form of a discreet earpiece.

Virtual Reality

Usually simply referred to as VR, this family of includes several related, but different technologies. VR gets its name from the classic, stereoscopic virtual reality headsets. Another branch of this family, augmented reality or AR, works by projecting or overlaying graphics on a personal display, often holographic, but AR usually does not refer to holographic emitters. The last most common family of VR, immersed reality, sometimes known as IR, actually interacts with the nervous system itself.

Some Examples

A popular, non-proprietary device used equally by security contractors, criminals, and rights activists.

Daifin M-Paper

It seems like regular paper, but at the nano-level it contains a technomagical medium that allows a skilled user to write MageCode to store spells, often for repeated use.

Invented and released originally in 2064. After its commercial release its Scarcity changes to Common.

Garra Special Cigar

Garra Special Can of Diet Cola

It looks like a typical can of fizzy beverage...

Garra Special Can of Doctor Prunier

It looks like a typical can of fizzy beverage, but it actually will open up a door with a local flash heat bubble. Typical fuse of 5 seconds.

Garra Special Jack Fruit Gum

It looks like a typical pack of gum, but after exposure to moisture, typically by chewing, 6 seconds later it will melt through small objects, such as door locks.

Personal Holographic Emitter

PhS Type-11 Medkit

Carries up to 6 charges. Standard charges heal 2d4+2.

Daifin Stealth Suit

Daifin Exploder Tactical Vest Ver 8.2.32

  1. Synchronize Random number generator through USB connection BEFORE deploying Vest.
  2. Verify Random number generator handheld unit matches controller on vest before closing access port.
    • It is very important to verify Step #2, once the access port is closed and unit is activated, there is no way to sync, or match, the handheld remote to the controller.
  3. There are no wireless connections whatsoever and no wired connections to the controller once closed.
  4. In order to deactivate the device, enter the correct code from the handheld remote to the USB Controller.
  5. The Handheld remote and USB Controller rotate codes every 45 seconds.
    • Both clock are accurate to with 15 millisec per hour. Sync a minimum once every 14 days as the unit may be 1 second apart by this point.
  6. Once correct code is entered, the options are: disarm, reset the timer, change the duration of the timer, Immediately detonate, timer detonate.
  7. After three incorrect code entries, the device detonates immediately.
    • To prevent erroneous entries, use the "lock controller input" function.
  8. As with the previous models, this is tamper proof.
    • if any sections of the unit are disconnected, the device detonates immediately.
  9. if the primary or secondary Power Supplies are disconnected or fail, the device detonates immediately after a 2 minute warning.
  10. If the suspect somehow slips out of the device, it will detonate before the suspect can get out of range.
  11. The access panel can only be accessed with the unit disarmed, laid flat, inside up. Accessing it any other way will cause immediate detonation.
  12. IMPORTANT - only deploy on suspects that will be still be alive at point of destination. The unit cannot distinguish between someone who has died and someone who escaped.
